Besides the beautiful beaches, the silent stones of our monasteries and the deep serenity of our caves, there is another side to Chios—one that is vibrant, rhythmic, and at times, literally explosive. When I envisioned Kalvokoresi 16, I wanted it to be a refined sanctuary where you could retreat after experiencing the high-energy, "hidden gem" traditions that define our local identity.
Here is my personal guide to the customs that keep the spirit of Chios alive across the seasons.

On the night of the Resurrection, the sky over Vrontados ignites. This world-famous custom involves a spectacular exchange of thousands of handmade rockets between two rival parishes: Saint Mark and Panagia Erithiani. It is a tradition rooted in the Ottoman era, and the resulting visual display is truly world-class. For a breathtaking panoramic view, many locals head to the "turns" of Mount Aipos to watch the fire-trails arc over the town.

During the Carnival season, the village of Thymiana hosts its most famous celebration, the Mostra. Rooted in the Middle Ages, it commemorates a local victory over raiding pirates. You will see locals performing the "Talimi," a unique dance that mimics the rhythmic movements of warriors in battle, accompanied by traditional instruments. The event culminates in a vibrant parade of satirical floats and a village-wide feast.

If you visit the Mastic villages like Mesta or Olympoi on Clean Monday, you might find yourself in "court". The custom of the Agas—dating back to the 1830s—features a local dressed as an Ottoman judge who holds mock trials for residents and visitors alike. It is a lighthearted, satirical tradition where no one escapes without paying a "fine" (often a round of drinks or a small donation), followed by grand feasts and dancing in the medieval squares.

Chios is an island of sailors, and our New Year’s tradition reflects this deep maritime soul. On New Year's Eve, groups from different neighborhoods compete in Plastira Square (near your suite) by displaying meticulously crafted model ships up to five meters long. The teams sing "Painemata" (praises) influenced by Asia Minor carols, celebrating the island's nautical history.

To feel the true heartbeat of Chios, you must attend a Panigyri. These are religious festivals that transform into all-night celebrations of music and dance. From the grand pilgrimage of Agia Markella on July 22nd to the authentic mountain feasts in Viki on August 15th, these events feature the violin, lute, and clarinet. It is where you will see the Syrto and Karsilamas dances performed until the first light of dawn.

The energy of these traditions is a testament to the resilience and vibrancy of our island’s people. After a day—or a long night—immersed in the rhythmic pulse of a village festival or the thunder of the Rocket War, there is no greater luxury than returning to the refined comfort of your suite.
Rinse away the celebrations under a premium Italian shower, wrap yourself in a branded bathrobe, and let our Tempur mattresses provide the restorative, quiet sleep you need to recharge. At Kalvokoresi 16, Quality is Our Address, and we are here to ensure your journey into the soul of Chios is as comfortable as it is unforgettable.
Warm Regards,
The Founder
