Kampos Chios, The Fragrant Heartland

Table Of Content

Introduction

While our medieval villages are the island’s stone soul, Kampos is its aromatic heart. A unique architectural and agricultural phenomenon, Kampos is a vast, lush garden where the aristocracy of the Mediterranean once built their dream residencies.

Entering Kampos is like stepping into a private world. Behind high walls of red Thymiiana stone lie hidden paradises: 200-year-old citrus groves, marble courtyards, and the grandest mansions in the Aegean. This was the home of the Maona—the Genoese mercantile elite who turned this fertile plain into a global hub for citrus trade.

Being a guest at Kalvokoresi 16, you are just a short bicycle ride or drive from this aristocratic enclave. Let me lead you through the high walls and hidden gates of the "Myrovolos" (The Fragrant Island).

1. The Genoese Mansions: Architecture of Prestige

Between the 14th and 18th centuries, the Genoese and later local noble families (the "Phanariotes") built approximately 200 fortified estates here. These mansions are architectural masterpieces featuring arched windows, monumental staircases, and family crests (coats of arms) etched into the stone. Many have been meticulously restored to their former glory, standing as silent witnesses to Chios's Golden Age.

2. The Citrus Museum & "Memories of Kampos"

Located in a stunning estate, the Citrus Museum is a must-visit to understand the life of the "Kambousi" families. It tells the story of the Chios Mandarin—voted among the most aromatic fruits in the world. You can see the traditional "maganos" (the water wheel used to irrigate the groves) and explore the award-winning museum that captures the essence of the trade that once fed the royal courts of Europe.

3. The Argentiko: The Pinnacle of Elegance

Directly across from the museum lies the Argentikon, perhaps the most famous estate in Kampos. Built by the Argenti family in the 16th century, its gardens are considered among the most beautiful in Europe. A walk past its grand gates offers a glimpse into a lifestyle defined by extreme refinement and absolute privacy—a standard of quality we strive to honor at No. 16.

4. The Scented Labyrinth: Exploration by Bicycle

The best way to experience Kampos is to get lost in its narrow lanes. The high walls were designed to protect the citrus trees from the wind and dust, creating a "labyrinth" effect. I highly recommend exploring the area by bicycle; the scent of the orange and lemon blossoms in the spring is an intoxicating sensory experience that you will carry with you forever.

A Note from Your Host

There is an undeniable grace in Kampos—a balance between nature’s abundance and man’s craftsmanship. It is the same balance I sought when designing Kalvokoresi 16. Just as the Genoese chose the finest stone and the most fragrant trees, we chose our premium materials to ensure your stay is as refined as a day in a Kampos garden.

After exploring the noble paths of our history, return to your suite, open a window to the Chian breeze, and enjoy the quiet luxury you deserve.

Warm Regards,
